Every once in a while life throws us one of it’s curve balls and there are times when we are unable to deal with these added stresses and problems. When this happens we are likely to begin to feel depressed. As time passes however, generally the depressed feelings will also pass. Unfortunately for a few individuals these feelings become depressive disorders and they may need medical help to recover from this phase. There are some symptoms of depression that can tell us if the depression is a disorder or just normal feelings of depression.

Every one who has a depressive disorder will not experience these symptoms in the same manner. There are different types of depressive disorder. For each of these depression types the individuals may feel the same symptoms in different ways and to a different degree. Although the symptoms of depression for the different disorder types will vary somewhat, there are some effects that are common to all.

The general symptoms of depression can include restlessness, irritability, thoughts of death, suicide, suicide attempts, insomnia, early morning waking, oversleeping, changes in appetite that are linked to unintentional weight gain or a weight loss.

Other symptoms of depression can include decreased energy, fatigue, physical and mental sluggishness, feeling guilty, worthlessness, pessimism, helplessness, persistent sadness. Also it is likely that the individual will feel empty and have anxious moods. It is important to note that the presentation and the severity of these symptoms will vary with each person.

The symptoms of depression can last for 6 months or even years. Not all symptoms of depression need to be found for a diagnosis of depression to be made. Indeed as you can see many of the symptoms actually appear to be contradictory of each other. You also need to be aware that the symptoms can change over a period of time. You really will need to talk with your doctor to find out what sort of treatment you might need should you be suffering from depression. As there is also a large variety of medication for depression you will need to know the potential side-effects that these medications can have on your body.

Once depression has been identified, you must not expect the many symptoms of depression to just vanish without any further complications. Remember that the treatment of depression takes time, often it’s onset is fairly insidious and sometimes the cure is too. During this treatment period you should not become upset if you do not become cured of depression quickly, learn to set yourself small goals for responding to treatment and celebrate each step that you take away from the darkness, however small it seems.

After your depression has been cured you can begin to rebuild your life anew, learning to appreciate the small things that you achieve and how to manage anxieties and stressors before they create too much of a problem for you. By an unforeseen circumstance, if you do begin get some symptoms of depression once more then you will know what needs to be done and will be able to access medical help more timely to minimise its’ impact.
