Bird Watching

Most of us love watching any wild birds that come into our gardens. We are happy to change our gardens from simply being outdoor living spaces into areas where we’ll attract as many different birds as possible.

Whilst many of us may enjoy just observing and listening to the birds that we attract to our gardens, to really gain the most out of bird watching it’s best to go where you’ll be able to find the maximum variety of birds in your area.

One such place to find a broad diversity of bird species is your local park, nature reserve or preferably bird sanctuary. Would you believe that there are about 500 National Wildlife Sanctuaries to be found in America alone? To find one that’s near you, (whichever country you live in), the internet should be of help.

Another way to enjoy bird watching is to know which particular birds live in the area that you’ll be visiting. As there are more than 900 species of American birds to be found it is not necessarily going to be easy to say that you know which birds you are looking at. In fact the only way to achieve this will be to do some research prior to going on your bird watching excursion.

Also making detailed notes of the birds you see when you are out will enable you to look up the names of them on your return.

Binoculars, or field glasses, are an essential piece of bird watching equipment. While you don’t need to spend hundreds of dollars on the most expensive model, you would be wise to have a pair that can stand up to the terrain that you’ll be going exploring, and the weather that you’ll have to endure on your trip. Essentially your binoculars must be able to keep images stabilized as this is an absolute necessity for long distance bird watching. Also your binoculars must be able to work in dim lighting and not fog up.

As birds are not sedentary creatures you will need to be able to focus on them very quickly. The ability to view birds in flight with ease requires much skill in ranging your binoculars or camera and focusing along with the motion of the birds quickly and accurately.

The only way to develop this technique is to practice, you can use a plane or your dog as a practice target as long as they are moving and distant, this will help to develop the skill you need to get the most out of bird watching. Once you’re proficient at this, you’ll be able to focus on anything that moves out in the field.

Sharing your trip with someone who shares your interest in bird watching will also possibly make it a more exciting one. Not only will they be able to discuss all that they know about bird watching with you, they can help to spot any birds that may otherwise stay hidden from your sight. Your friend may even know some extra tricks that’ll help you find and photograph some posing birds.

The reasons for bird watching are numerous but the main one must be that you’ll enjoy understanding more about these delightful feathered creatures that abide in the world alongside us. This will make your enjoyment of the birds in your garden and home even more intense.

After all, as every bird watching fanatic knows there’s nothing quite as relaxing and pleasant as bird watching. If you add a thermos of aromatic, steaming coffee into the mix you’ll truly be set for a memorable time.
